Will I have to wear a bee suit?

Q. Will I have to wear a bee suit?

A. It really depends on your comfort level, but with the proper approach, you will not necessarily need a bee suit, or any specific protective clothing. The Backyard Hive differs substantially from traditional hives in that you don't need to remove the entire top of the hive to see what is going on inside the hive or to remove combs. With the Backyard Hive, you only remove a few bars at a time exposing only a few inches of the top of the hive. If you remove combs carefully and slowly, the bees won't even care that you are there. Just brush off the few bees that remain on the comb as you remove it. A handful of long grass works well as a simple brush that won't harm or agitate your bees.

Many people, when they first start out, feel better and more relaxed if they wear a bee suit. This is a great, stress-free way to get started. Here is a link to the bee suits we use.

From what I understand, white is invisible, or nothingness to the bees. Colors don't really agitate bees, colors give the bees targets to fly at. If one has really pissed off the bees there may be one or two guard bees that will key off the black netting. The bug shirt that I use has a black mosquito netting.

I understand bees don\'t like dark colors. Will the dark mesh of the mosquito netting agitate the bees?
