The Original BackYardHive - Top Bar Hive

BackYard Hive Original Top Bar Hive

The original Top Bar hive designed by Corwin Bell of BackYardHive.com.
Corwin continually makes improvements to the line of top bar hives we offer
at BackYardHive.com. A few of the main featuires of our Top Bar hives are
the viewing window and the triangle (wedge shape) top bars
Corwin is the first top bar developer to add these key
features to top bar hives. The viewing window allows the beekeeper to
look inside the hive without disturbing the bees. This is a less invasive practice.

The triangle top bars are specially designed and have a greater surface area
for the bees to attach their comb, which result in straighter and sturdier combs
for the beekeeper to work with.

The Golden Mean top bar hive was developed by Corwin Bell after noticing how productive
the bees were in hives that Corwin had built that were in Golden Mean proportion.
In the Golden Mean hive, the bees tend to bee more productive in drawing out combs
resulting in more honey production. The Golden Mean hive is our best seller of the two
hives we offer.

Pre-Built Top Bars for Your Self-Built Hive

Triangle top barstriangle top bars

If you choose to build your own hive based on our Top Bar Hive Plans (listed above)  we suggest that you purchase these pre-made top bars.  A set of top bars are offered as a package with the Hive Plans (please see above).

But if you choose to purchase additional sets of top bars to build more than one hive, please see the options below for top bar sets.

You also can purchase single top bars below as well.

Our Top Bars are a "triangle" top bar, which allow the bees more surface area to attach their comb and  as a result they draw straighter, more stable combs. The top bars are milled from hardwood. We have had excellent success with the bees drawing absolute straight comb on these new top bars that they are the only top bars we offer.

Packages of top bars can be purchased with the Top Bar Hive Plans (see listed above).
Or you can order the top bars only in sets or singles.

BackYardHive's Top Bar Hive Tool

 Top bar hive tool

We've created a new hive tool for the top bar! Finally a sturdy tool

to scrap off comb and pry top bars loose all in one tool. Plus it looks
good! We figured that the top bar hive deserved a tool with a little

class. We were feeling left out since there are so many tools

to buy for the traditional hives we wanted a tool for the top bar hives!

The Original Top Bar Hive tool is made of forged steel and brass.

90-Degree Angled Top Bar Hive Tool

angled top bar hive tool
This is a great addition to your hive tool kit! Designed as a supplemental tool to our main, original BYH tool sold above, the 90 degree angle of the flat blade allows you to get underneath the combs.

The tool has 2 small metal beads welded on the bottom so that you can easily toe/heel step the tool across the floor in order to loosen any attachments at the bottom of the hive. The tool can also be used as an extra support when removing full combs as it can easily scoot underneath, acting as a seat when lifting the combs from the hive.

Bee Herding Tool

Bee herding tool Top Bar hiveBee Herding tool

We've created another new tool for the top bar! Instead of brushing your

bees off a comb with a bee brush or grass, we "herd" them off of the comb
back into the hive with the new herding tool. We have found this is much less
agitating to the bees and it prevents the bees from flying all over in the air as they do

when you use a brush. With the herding tool, you gently herd
them off the comb, moving slowly, and push them back into the hive. Less stress for everyone!

BOOKS

The Practical Beekeeper _All Volumes

Michael Bush The Practical Beekeeper Full Volume

This book is about how to keep bees in a natural and practical system where they do not require treatments for pests and diseases and only minimal interventions. It is also about simple practical beekeeping. It is about reducing your work. It is not a main-stream beekeeping book. Many of the concepts are contrary to "conventional" beekeeping. The techniques presented here are streamlined through decades of experimentation, adjustments and simplification. The content was written and then refined from responding to questions on bee forums over the years so it is tailored to the questions that beekeepers, new and experienced, have.
It is divided into three volumes and this edition contains all three:
Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced.

Wisdom of the Bees

Principles for Biodynamic Beekeeping

by Erik Berrevoets

Wisdom of the Bees
An accessible and essential introduction to the urgent subject of holistic beekeeping practices.

While the benefits of Rudolf Steiner's research into agriculture and education are increasingly recognized, his research into the nature of bees has had limited impact on beekeeping practices and on our general understanding of nature. Wisdom of the Bees examines Steiner's insights and research into the nature of bees and their implications for the future of beekeeping.

Today, more than eighty years after Steiner presented his lectures on bees, we are confronted with a situation he predicted — a serious decline of honeybees around the world. This fact alone justifies Wisdom of the Bees, a practical and timely introduction to biodynamic beekeeping. Erik Berrevoets, an experience beekeeper, revisits those seminal lectures and reexamines Steiner's observations and insights in the context of today's dire situation, while providing practical advice for modern beekeeping practices.

Towards Saving the Honeybee

by Gunther Hauk

Towards Saving the Honeybee

A book from a pioneer in the field of beekeeping addresses the current plight of the honeybee and that noble creature’s reaction to the past 100 years of hive mechanization and human manipulation. Hauk, a biodynamic gardener and beekeeper for over 25 years, approaches the bee “as a sick patient who has been trying for years to signal to us the deep crises of its diminishing life forces and its increasing inability to resonate with the environment.” Toward Saving the Honeybee presents the bee colony as a complex and delicate organism, with a life and vital functions far beyond the production of honey. Construction of the hive, colony hierarchy, swarming, as well as foul brood, mites and disease are all discussed in the context of the hive as a whole. Softcover, 80 pages
