The Golden Mean Hive

BackYard Hive Golden Mean Ratio Proportion Top Bar HiveTop Bar Hive Golden Mean Proportion

The Golden Mean top bar hive was developed by Corwin Bell after noticing how productive
the bees were in hives that Corwin had built that were in Golden Mean proportion.
In the Golden Mean hive, the bees tend to bee more productive in drawing out combs
resulting in more honey production.

The Original BackYardHive  - Top Bar Hive

BackYard Hive Original Top Bar Hive

The Original Top Bar Hive designed by Corwin Bell of BackYardHive.com.
Corwin continually makes improvements to the line of top bar hives we offer
at BackYardHive.com. A few of the main features of our Top Bar hives are
the viewing window and the triangle (wedge shape) top bars
Corwin was the first top bar developer to add these key
features to top bar hives. The viewing window allows the beekeeper to
look inside the hive without disturbing the bees. This is a less invasive practice.

The triangle top bars are specially designed and have a greater surface area
for the bees to attach their comb, which result in straighter and sturdier combs
for the beekeeper to work with.

The New Cathedral Hive

The next evolution in top bar hive design

Cathedral_Hive_Deluxe_Living_Roof

The Cathedral Hive is a high volume hive with high potential honey production.
Pictured with the Living Roof

Over the last 5 years we let the bees determine how the hive was created. We made several hives per year
in order to test numerous variables and modifications and then by observing how bees interacted with the
modification, we adapted the architecture. With each successive hive we made, we either included or
abandoned the previous modification depending on the response from the bees

Dimensions: 31" L x 20" W x 15 1/2" H

-20 hexagonal shaped top bars with 'Passage Holes' and ventilation system

The triangle top bars are the most difficult part of the hive to create yet offer one of the greatest benefits for you and the bees.

backyardhive triangle top bars with honeycombtriangle top bars with honeycomb

Our Top Bars are a "triangle" top bar, which allow the bees more surface area to attach their comb and as a result
they draw straighter, more stable combs. The top bars are milled from hardwood. We have had excellent success
with the bees drawing absolute straight comb on these new top bars that they are the only top bars we offer.

We offer 3 options to build your hive:

1) The Hive Plans only

2) The Hive Plans & Hardware (Hardware consists of all the screws and window latches)

3) The Kit - The Plans, a full set of top bars, hardware & spacers

This Ventilated Roof offers great protection from the elements and insulates your hive in the
summer and winter! The roof fits over the normal lid of the Golden Mean Hive, Original BackYardHive
or the new Cathedral Hive. This new vented roof has screened vents on both ends and all along
the top of the roof. This allows for proper ventilation and air flow and keeps any unwanted critters
from being to access the area underneath the roof. Our roof designs are modeled after the way that
most house roofs are constructed, with a vented peak. The roof is designed to breathe and create
a lot of air exchange through natural micro convection.

  Hive Tools

BackYardHive's Original Top Bar Hive Tool

 Top bar hive tool

The ultimate hive tool needed for working your top bar hive. An all-in-one sturdy hive tool for easily removing
combs and prying apart top bars when working with your hive. The sharpened end allows you to easily scrape
off comb attachments for easy harvesting of combs. The detailed handle end is functional for prying top bars
loose from propolis seals the bees have created.

We figured that the top bar hive deserved a tool with a little class. We were feeling left out since there are so
many tools to buy for the traditional hives we wanted a tool that would work really well for top bar hives!

Owner Corwin Bell designed the hive tool to be functional and a piece of art. He designed the detailed handle
to resemble a bee wing and yet be functional to pry part top bars. The other end of the hive tool is sharp
enough to easily cut through combs and also can be used to help lift heavy honeycombs out of the hive.

Each Original Top Bar Hive Tool is made by hand from forged steel and brass.

This is a great addition to your hive tool kit!
Designed as a supplemental tool to our main, original BYH tool sold above,
the 90 degree angle of the flat blade allows you to get underneath the combs.

The tool has 2 small metal beads welded on the bottom so that you can easily toe/heel step the tool
across the floor in order to loosen
any attachments at the bottom of the hive. The tool can also be
used as an extra support when removing full combs as it can easily scoot underneath,
acting as a seat when lifting the combs from the hive.

We've created another new tool for cleaning the hive and scraping propolis

This new hive tool has become one of the staple tools we use with our bee hives.

Bee Herding Tool

Bee herding tool Top Bar hiveBee Herding tool

We've created another new tool for the top bar!

Instead of brushing your bees off a comb with a bee brush or grass, we "herd" them off of the comb
back into the hive with the new herding tool. We have found this is much less
agitating to the bees and it prevents the bees from flying all over in the air as they do when you use a brush.

With the herding tool, you gently herd them off the comb, moving slowly, and push them back into the hive.
Less stress for everyone!

BOOKS

Wisdom of the Bees

Principles for Biodynamic Beekeeping

by Erik Berrevoets

Wisdom of the Bees

An accessible and essential introduction to the urgent subject of holistic beekeeping practices.

While the benefits of Rudolf Steiner's research into agriculture and education are increasingly recognized,
his research into the nature of bees has had limited impact on beekeeping practices and on our general
understanding of nature. Wisdom of the Bees examines Steiner's insights and research into the nature
of bees and their implications for the future of beekeeping.

Today, more than eighty years after Steiner presented his lectures on bees, we are confronted with a
situation he predicted — a serious decline of honeybees around the world. This fact alone justifies
Wisdom of the Bees, a practical and timely introduction to biodynamic beekeeping. Erik Berrevoets,
an experience beekeeper, revisits those seminal lectures and reexamines Steiner's observations and
insights in the context of today's dire situation, while providing practical advice for modern
beekeeping practices.

Wisdom of the Bees Beekeeping Book

Towards Saving the Honeybee

by Gunther Hauk

Towards Saving the Honeybee

A book from a pioneer in the field of beekeeping addresses the current plight of the honeybee and
that noble creature’s reaction to the past 100 years of hive mechanization and human manipulation.
Hauk, a biodynamic gardener and beekeeper for over 25 years, approaches the bee “as a sick
patient who has been trying for years to signal to us the deep crises of its diminishing life forces
and its increasing inability to resonate with the environment.” Toward Saving the Honeybee
presents the bee colony as a complex and delicate organism, with a life and vital functions
far beyond the production of honey. Construction of the hive, colony hierarchy, swarming,
as well as foul brood, mites and disease are all discussed in the context of the hive as
a whole. Softcover, 80 pages

The Practical Beekeeper _All Volumes

Michael Bush The Practical Beekeeper Full Volume

This book is about how to keep bees in a natural and practical system where they do not require
treatments for pests and diseases and only minimal interventions. It is also about simple practical
beekeeping. It is about reducing your work. It is not a main-stream beekeeping book. Many of
the concepts are contrary to "conventional" beekeeping. The techniques presented here are
streamlined through decades of experimentation, adjustments and simplification. The content
was written and then refined from responding to questions on bee forums over the years so
it is tailored to the questions that beekeepers, new and experienced, have.
It is divided into three volumes and this edition contains all three:
Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced.

for customs clearance must be fulfilled by the recipient; BackYardHive.com has no
control over these charges, nor can BackYardHive.com predict what they may be.

Customs policies vary widely from country to country; you should contact your local customs
office for more information. When customs clearance procedures are required, it can cause
delays beyond our original delivery estimates.

Note:

  • Customs offices in some countries require the importer of record to provide a particular
form of identification before releasing a shipment. You may be required to provide an
identification number such as a Unique Identification Number, CPF, or Tax ID.
  • Countries that require an identification number include: Brazil, Chile, China, Ecuador,
India, Israel, Peru, Qatar, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, and Turkey.

If you are ordering several large items (over 150 pounds/69 kilos) email us for a shipping quote.
